From the Town of Oakville: The Town of Oakville has 1,680 more trees in the ground thanks to Oakville Hydro. The trees are a result of Oakville Hydro’s spring eBilling campaign to donate $10 towards a tree for every customer who made the switch from paper to electronic bills. A number of Oakville Hydro employees dug in to help plant the trees on town property at the corner of Rebecca Street and Great Lakes Boulevard in southwest Oakville.

“On behalf of Town Council, I want to thank Oakville Hydro, its customers, and all of the volunteers for their contribution in creating a greener Oakville,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “I take great pride in how we continue working together to protect, preserve and grow our urban forest.”

The property is the site of a newly constructed storm water management pond and an adjacent watercourse. Intensive planting in this area is important to establish a thick canopy that will help ward off growth of invasive plant life and help stabilize the pond and creek banks.

“We were excited to offer our customers the opportunity to help build Oakville’s tree canopy as a result of our eBilling campaign earlier this year,” said Rob Lister, President and CEO of Oakville Hydro. “Through their registrations, Oakville Hydro was able to donate 1,680 trees to the Town of Oakville. eBilling is environmentally friendly and, in this case, going paperless also donated a tree. It’s a win-win. Staff are able to give back to the community we serve through planting trees and that makes the work even more rewarding.”

The new trees will be added to the tree counter on the town’s PLANT page. PLANT tracks the number of trees planted by town staff, residents, businesses and community groups as the town works towards its 40 per cent canopy cover goal. Learn more at oakville.ca.
