Grid Automation

Oakville Hydro is advancing grid automation to improve reliability, operational efficiency, and responsiveness. As part of our proactive asset renewal strategy, we are replacing legacy air-insulated switchgear with modern gas-insulated alternatives. This upgrade enables remote control from our operations center, enhancing system flexibility while offering greater protection against extreme weather conditions.

Currently, more than 50% of major switching points across Oakville’s distribution system are automated, improving grid resilience and service continuity. Additionally, our Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR) system plays a crucial role in minimizing outages. By detecting faults, isolating issues, and restoring power automatically, FLISR enhances reliability, ensuring that customers experience shorter disruptions and faster restorations.

Asset Replacements

Maintaining a safe and reliable electricity system requires continuous investment in infrastructure renewal. Oakville Hydro takes a proactive approach to asset management, replacing aging and at-risk equipment before failures occur. This includes upgrading transformers, switches, poles, cables, and wires to enhance reliability, reduce the risk of outages, and support the town’s growing energy demands.

These strategic upgrades strengthen the existing grid while laying the foundation for future modernization, enabling Oakville Hydro to adapt to new technologies and evolving customer needs.

Grid Expansion

With Oakville experiencing continued residential, commercial, and industrial growth, Oakville Hydro is expanding its electrical infrastructure to meet increasing energy demand. Using growth projections and energy consumption trends, we develop long-term expansion strategies to ensure a scalable and resilient grid that supports the town’s economic development.
By investing in new distribution lines, transformers, and substations, we ensure that new customers receive reliable, high-quality electricity service while maintaining system performance for existing customers.

Substations

Oakville Hydro operates 19 municipal substations, which step down power from four Hydro One-owned transformer stations, along with Oakville Hydro’s Glenorchy Municipal Transformer Station, serving North Oakville. These substations convert electricity from 27.6 kV to either 4.16 kV or 13.8 kV, ensuring safe and efficient power distribution to homes and businesses.
To maintain system reliability, Oakville Hydro employs preventive maintenance, upgrades, and strategic replacements for substation equipment. This ensures continued grid resilience and capacity to support Oakville’s long-term energy needs.
